My First Solo Maputo City Tour – A Real Experience

On January 20th, 2026, I led my very first Maputo city tour as a solo guide. To be honest… I was nervous.

Hello, my name is Romão Nenane, a tour guide in Maputo, Mozambique, and this experience was part of a collaboration between Maputo Trips and Nenane Tours — two local companies dedicated to offering authentic walking tours in Maputo.

The Moment Everything Changed

The tour started with a simple but unexpected question: “Can I film us while we tour?”

At that moment, I felt like I had been thrown into the deep end. During my training, no one had ever asked that. But I took a breath, ignored the butterflies, and said yes.

That was the moment my journey as a professional tour guide in Maputo truly began.

More Than a Maputo Walking Tour

This wasn’t just a typical Maputo walking tour. We explored: the history of Maputo, Mozambique, local culture and daily life, political and social discussions, even complex topics like national development.

We talked about the plane crash of former president Samora Machel and debated different perspectives on Mozambique’s progress. As they say: “Great tours are built on great conversations.”

A Cultural Stop in Maputo

Halfway through the tour, light rain started to fall — almost like a blessing. We stopped at the Centro Cultural Franco-Moçambicano, one of the cultural landmarks often included in a Maputo cultural tour, for coffee and drinks. Moments like these are what make things to do in Maputo truly memorable.

A Curious Traveler Makes the Difference

Silvia, my guest, is a journalist working for a television company in her country. And it showed. She asked insightful questions at every step — turning a simple private tour in Maputo into a deep and engaging exchange of ideas.

Time Flies on a Great Tour

The tour lasted about three and a half hours. But honestly? It felt like 30 minutes. “Time flies when you’re fully present.”

Why This Maputo Tour Still Matters

As my first solo experience, this tour taught me something important: Being a tour guide in Mozambique is not just about showing places. It’s about sharing perspectives, learning from travelers, creating meaningful human connections.

If you’re looking for things to do in Maputo, don’t just look for places — look for experiences. And sometimes, the best ones start with a little nervousness… and a simple “yes.”

Thank you, Silvia. A luta continua.
