A Curious Mind from New York – A Maputo Tour Full of Questions and Conversations

On March 10th, I received a very curious guest from the State of New York, USA. And let me tell you — what an inquisitive fella. An amazing character. I loved every minute of it.

Hello, my name is Romão Nenane, a tour guide based in Maputo, Mozambique. This experience was made possible through a collaboration between Maputo Trips and Nenane Tours — two local companies committed to showcasing the soul of the city through authentic Maputo city tours.

A Late Start… But Worth the Wait

The tour was originally scheduled for 10:00 AM, but due to a flight delay, Mr. Maung and I only began our historical journey at around 2:30 PM. Now, most people would see that as a setback. But as they say: “Good things are worth the wait.” And this tour proved exactly that.

An Inquisitive Traveler Changes Everything

Mr. Maung came prepared. He had done his research, read extensively about Mozambique, and brought a level of curiosity that elevated the entire experience. Honestly, he made the tour feel effortless — almost like a conversation between two people exploring ideas rather than just a guide explaining facts.

At every stop of our Maputo walking tour, we had something to unpack.

From Ancestors to Pop Culture

Our conversations covered a wide range of topics: ancestral heritage and traditional practices, historical perspectives on Mozambique, global influences, even the Rocky movies. And of course… football.

Now here’s something I appreciated: Not once did he call it soccer. Respect. Mr. Maung is a true football enthusiast. He wasn’t even surprised when I mentioned that the first African player to win the Ballon d’Or was Eusébio — not George Weah. That told me everything I needed to know.

“You can tell a lot about a person by what they pay attention to.”

When the Tourist Elevates the Tour

As a tour guide in Maputo, I meet different people all the time. But every now and then, you come across someone who doesn’t just participate in the tour — they elevate it. Mr. Maung was one of those people. His curiosity, knowledge, and openness turned what could have been a standard private tour in Maputo into something much more meaningful.

Final Thoughts

I truly hope our paths cross again someday, Maung Min. Experiences like this remind me why I do what I do. Because in the end, a great Maputo city tour is not just about places — it’s about people, ideas, and shared curiosity.

Thank you. A luta continua.
